Eleven police officers, including two senior officials, have appeared in the Vereeniging Regional Court to face charges related to theft, extortion, and corruption.
The allegations stem from an incident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where the officers are accused of unlawfully seizing alcohol and cash from a business.
According to reports, the officers confronted a store owner, accusing him of illegally selling alcohol.
They allegedly took liquor valued at R600,000, along with R700,000 in cash and a hard drive.
While the shop owner and his father were restrained, a backup CCTV system reportedly recorded the officers removing alcohol from the premises.
Following an investigation, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) determined there was sufficient evidence to proceed with charges against the officers involved.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within law enforcement.
