TWO suspected poachers have been shot dead in Katombola, near the Kazungula Border Post in Matabeleland North province, while three other suspects were arrested.

The latest incident evokes memories of the recent poaching of six elephants in the Gwayi-Shangani Conservancy, which was a reminder of the barbaric poisoning of over 80 elephants in 2013 in the Hwange National Park, Southern Africa’s largest game reserve.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) and other security agents have since combined efforts with two suspected poachers being shot while three others were arrested this Tuesday.

“We can confirm that there was an unfortunate incident in Katombola North Matabeleland province where two suspected poachers were gunned down after the exchange of gunfire with our rangers who were on patrol. We have managed to arrest three suspects and one suspect managed to escape.

“We have recovered about 15 tusks of elephants. We have also recovered a point 375 rifle and five rounds of ammunition. Investigations are currently in progress, we are saying no to poaching and if you are found within protected areas with a rifle, you will be arrested,” said Zimparks spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo.

Continued poaching could result in a significant decline of wildlife populations and in the process threaten wildlife-driven economies, including tourism.
