A 27-year-old bus conductor tragically lost his life in a freak accident on Saturday after being run over by the same bus from which he had jumped while it was still in motion. The accident occurred along Nemakonde Road, near Conway College in Harare.

According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the conductor had attempted to open the door of the moving bus to pick up a passenger. He lost his balance, fell onto the tarmac, and was subsequently struck by the bus’s left rear wheels. Despite being rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, the young man succumbed to his injuries upon arrival, having sustained severe head trauma in the incident.

The police have since issued a warning to all bus and commuter omnibus conductors, urging them to avoid opening doors while vehicles are in motion. The ZRP expressed concern over the safety risks posed by such actions, emphasizing that it could lead to avoidable accidents.

“The ZRP warns bus and commuter omnibus conductors against opening doors while the vehicles are in motion. This follows the fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 19 October 2024,” read part of the police statement.
