NetOne, Zimbabwe’s first mobile telecommunications company, is celebrating 30 years of service, marking a journey that has seen the company grow from a mobile network provider into a key player in the country’s digital transformation.

Established in 1996, NetOne was launched at a time when mobile phones were rare and communication services were limited, especially in rural areas. Over the past three decades, the company has helped connect millions of Zimbabweans and expanded access to communication and digital services across the country.

Today, mobile technology is used for much more than making calls. It supports education, business, healthcare, agriculture and financial services. NetOne says it has played an important role in ensuring that more Zimbabweans can access these opportunities through improved connectivity.

Under the leadership of Group Chief Executive Officer Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, the company has invested in expanding its network and introducing modern technologies such as 4G LTE and 5G services. These investments are aimed at supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and communities as Zimbabwe moves towards a digital economy.

NetOne’s growth has also aligned with the government’s Vision 2030 development agenda, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy. Through network expansion and digital innovation, the company says it is contributing to national development and economic growth.

Beyond telecommunications, NetOne has been actively involved in community development programmes. The company has donated computers and digital learning equipment to schools, supported school infrastructure projects and invested in solar-powered solutions in underserved communities.

It has also established nutritional gardens to promote food security and implemented programmes that support vulnerable groups, including people with albinism. In addition, NetOne has participated in campaigns aimed at combating drug and substance abuse among young people.

The company says these initiatives reflect its commitment to inclusive development and ensuring that no community is left behind.

NetOne has also strengthened international connectivity through roaming partnerships, helping Zimbabweans remain connected while travelling and supporting regional trade and business activities.

As it celebrates its pearl anniversary, NetOne says its focus remains on expanding connectivity, empowering communities and creating opportunities through technology.

After three decades of connecting Zimbabweans, the company believes the next chapter will be about helping more people benefit from the opportunities offered by the digital age.
