Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, the son of the late former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, was recently detained in Beitbridge for alleged violent behavior. The incident reportedly occurred at a roadblock in Bubi, approximately 80 kilometers north of Beitbridge, where Chatunga is said to have assaulted a police officer.
According to the allegations, Chatunga pulled out a knife during a confrontation with the police, who claim he resisted their attempts to arrest him.
Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the officer in charge of the Beitbridge Police District, confirmed Chatunga’s arrest but was unable to provide more details. “I’ve just been informed about his arrest, but I’m not currently in the office,” Ncube stated in a brief comment.
Sources revealed that the incident unfolded around 6:00 AM when Chatunga arrived at the Bubi roadblock in a vehicle driven by a Chinese national. He reportedly became agitated when the officers requested identification and documents for the vehicle.
“He began shouting at the officers, demanding to know why they were delaying him, and questioning if they knew who he was. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a Support Unit officer by the collar, tearing off the buttons of his shirt,” the sources recounted.
At this point, Chatunga allegedly brandished an Okapi knife but was overpowered by the officers, who then took him into custody and transported him to the Beitbridge Rural Police Station for further processing.
Chatunga is one of three children of Robert Mugabe, along with his brother Robert Jr. and sister Bona, who was named after Mugabe’s mother.
