Influencer and model Suellen Carey raised eyebrows last-year after tying the knot with herself in a ceremony in London. The 36-year-old documented the bizarre celebration – dubbed as sologamy – with her 400,000 Instagram followers and garnered global media attention.
Originally from Brazil but now living in London, Suellen even went through couples therapy on her own to try and make the marriage last, but recently revealed her divorce after admitting there were times she felt lonely. Now, she’s willing to give monogomy a go, but still doesn’t regret her solo adventure.
“I realised that self-analysis and reflection is essential,” she said. “It’s crucial to know when to end a cycle. Even commitment to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time.
I realised I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and that sometimes left me exhausted. I understood that even in a marriage with ourselves, it’s important to accept our imperfections.”
The influencer had 10 sessions with a therapist to try and push through the problems – but came to the conclusion that divorce was her only option.
