Harare, 10 October 2024 – Former Chegutu West Member of Parliament, Dexter Nduna, has issued a public apology to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, following an embarrassing incident where he falsely presented himself as a graduate of the University of Zimbabwe’s (UZ) law class of 2024.
In a letter addressed to the President and widely circulated on social media, Nduna, a senior ZanuPF member, confessed to prematurely celebrating his supposed graduation from the UZ on the 13th of September 2024. He admitted to donning graduation attire and participating in the ceremonies, despite not having fully completed his law degree.
The former MP explained that he had been assured by UZ authorities that the remarking of his outstanding modules was underway, leading him to believe that his graduation status would be confirmed by the time of the ceremony. However, after the event, Nduna discovered through social media that his name was missing from the final list of law graduates. He was subsequently informed that two of his modules remained incomplete, thus disqualifying him from graduating.
In the letter, Nduna expressed deep remorse for his actions, apologizing to President Mnangagwa for tarnishing the credibility of both the University and the ruling ZanuPF party.
Nduna, a former legislator and military officer, acknowledged that his excitement and eagerness to complete his law degree clouded his judgment. “I should not have allowed the administrative glitches at the institution and my own excitement… to cloud my judgment and act the way I did on the day of graduation,” Nduna stated.
The disgraced politician further revealed that arrangements have since been made for him to register and sit for the exams of the outstanding modules. He sought forgiveness from the President and hoped his mistake would not damage the revered image of the University or the ruling party.
