Harare – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning against the recording and sharing of footage from accident and tragedy scenes, describing the behavior as morally reprehensible and legally punishable. In a press statement released on November 16, 2024, the ZRP condemned individuals who prioritize filming distressing events, such as accidents and drownings, over assisting victims or contacting emergency services.

The statement emphasized that such conduct violates the dignity and privacy of victims and their families, adding that it exacerbates the trauma for those involved. ZRP Commissioner Nyathi stated that recent incidents have prompted the force to press for criminal charges against those who exploit such tragedies for personal gain or notoriety.

“Filming or sharing footage of individuals in life-threatening situations without their consent or that of their families is unacceptable and warrants legal repercussions,” the statement read.

The police highlighted that the primary concern in emergencies should be ensuring the safety and well-being of victims. They urged witnesses to focus on calling for help or providing aid if it is safe to do so. The ZRP also expressed support for enforcing legal action to deter the exploitation of tragic moments.

The press statement called for a societal shift towards compassion and civic responsibility, encouraging citizens to prioritize humanity and decency in emergencies. The ZRP reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a community rooted in respect, empathy, and accountability.

As part of the new directive, the ZRP warned that those caught filming or distributing distressing footage at accident scenes will face legal consequences. Residents are urged to stand together against this troubling trend and support victims with dignity and respect.
