The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is available to individuals from developing nations who have relevant work experience and a proven commitment to contributing to their country’s development.

The scholarship is designed for those applying to a master’s degree program in a development-focused field.

Host Institutions and Programs:

The JJ/WBGSP supports studies at 41 participating master’s programs located in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan.

Target Audience:

Citizens of developing countries that are members of the World Bank.

Scholarship Coverage:

Recipients of the JJ/WBGSP scholarship receive:

  • Full tuition coverage
  • A monthly living allowance
  • Round-trip airfare
  • Health insurance
  • Travel allowances

The scholarship is granted for the duration of the graduate program or up to two years, whichever is shorter.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Nationality: Be a citizen of a World Bank member developing country.
  2. Dual Citizenship: Must not hold dual citizenship with a developed country.
  3. Health: Be in excellent health.
  4. Educational Background: Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least three years before the application deadline.
  5. Work Experience:
    • Have at least three years of paid, development-related work experience after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
    • • You must have completed this job within the last six years.
    • Exceptions are considered for individuals from fragile or conflict-affected states.
  6. Admission: Secure unconditional admission (excluding financial requirements) to one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs outside the applicant’s home country or country of residence by the scholarship application deadline.
  7. Exclusions:
    • World Bank Group staff, executive directors, and their close relatives are ineligible.
    • Individuals who previously declined a JJ/WBGSP scholarship or failed to complete a program after receiving the scholarship are also disqualified.

Application Process:

To apply for the JJ/WBGSP, candidates must:

  1. First, secure unconditional admission to at least one participating master’s program.
  2. Receive a link to the JJ/WBGSP application form from the participating university if shortlisted.

Application Windows:

The program has two application windows based on the chosen master’s program:

  • Window #1: January 13, 2025, to February 28, 2025 (noon EST)
  • Window #2: March 25, 2025, to May 23, 2025 (noon EST)
