HARARE – Over 200 houses, including two luxury mansions near the National Heroes Acre, are set for demolition after being illegally built on land reserved for the expansion of Harare Drive, The Herald has learned.
Harare City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to tearing down all unauthorized structures, stressing that Harare Drive was planned as a continuous circular route around the city, with no alterations to its original blueprint.
An investigation by The Herald uncovered numerous properties encroaching on the designated road reserve, jeopardizing the project’s progress.
In some areas, such as Mainway Meadows in Waterfalls, residents have respected the 60-metre corridor meant for the road’s future development. However, in places like Retreat, construction continues unchecked, with reports of land barons illegally selling stands on land earmarked for the expansion.
Concerned residents have expressed confusion over the status of their homes, as uncertainty looms over the impending demolitions.
