Gamu Nemukuyu

Gamu Nemukuyu, the ex-wife of DJ Fantan, has shared her experience of living in an abusive relationship, revealing that the constant torment from her former husband severely impacted her mental well-being.

Last Wednesday, Gamu left Harare with her children and relocated to South Africa to escape the ongoing emotional strain she was facing.

In a statement, DJ Fantan posted about his search for Gamu and their two children, claiming they had disappeared.

Gamu explained, “I had to leave because of the way my ex-husband was treating me. I could not bear the frustration and emotional torture anymore. The daily torment was too much to handle.”

She went on to describe his constant calls, often late at night or early in the morning, under the pretext of checking on the children. “He would call at 6 am, asking if I wanted to help with the kids’ homework. Who does that?” she said.

Gamu revealed that DJ Fantan would also show up unannounced, pretending to check on the kids, only to start arguments.

“He ended our marriage. It hurt, and I cried, but I never went to his new marriage to cause trouble or made any comments about him on social media after we split,” she said.

She also spoke about the challenges she faced living under his control. “He does not like that my new boyfriend helps with the kids and contributes to the bills,” she added.

Describing her life as unbearable, Gamu explained that DJ Fantan’s visits and the tension he created were affecting their home. “At one point, I asked myself if this was the environment I wanted for my children.”

Gamu mentioned that despite knowing his wife, Vimbai, and having a cordial relationship with her, the issue was with her ex-husband’s behaviour.

“I took him to court for maintenance, but he claimed he couldn’t pay the agreed amount of US$300,” she explained. “I asked him for money for medicine and food for our child, who has a medical condition, but he ignored me and would come to my house, shouting and offering no help.”

After years of enduring this, Gamu decided that leaving was her only option. “I knew it would not stop, so I made the decision to move to South Africa. I needed peace of mind.”

She confirmed that her decision to move was final, saying, “We are safe here, and I have accepted that he does not want me. I could not report him to the authorities because nothing would happen.”
