Outspoken politician Temba Mliswa has accused businessman Wicknell Chivayo of indirectly causing the armed robbery that took place at the farm of Lulu Muteke’s parents in Marondera.
A group of 20 armed criminals raided Alpha Omega Farm, which belongs to Chivayo’s in-laws, escaping with US$74,100 in cash, a pistol, and several valuable electronic devices, including Samsung S24, S23, and Galaxy A35 smartphones.
Taking to social media on March 19, Mliswa blamed Chivayo for drawing unnecessary attention to the farm’s wealth.
He argued that Chivayo’s public display of affluence, especially in videos showcasing the extravagant lobola (bride price) he paid, had alerted potential criminals.
“This unfortunate event is entirely due to my sekuru Moyo, who publicly revealed the large amounts of money spent during the lobola ceremony. He should be questioned by the police because his actions put his in-laws at risk by inviting robbers,” Mliswa stated.
Mliswa further cautioned Chivayo against openly displaying his riches, particularly in a struggling economy like Zimbabwe’s.
“People are struggling, and you can’t parade money in front of them like that. It only increases the risk of harm or even death for your loved ones. Matters of wealth should remain private. There’s no need to keep reminding the public it’s your money,” Mliswa said.
He added, “Considering the state of the country, public figures should be mindful of what they share. I have advised my sekuru to use some of his wealth for a good cause, such as donating computers to Dudley Hall School, where he studied.”
Mliswa also encouraged Chivayo to channel his resources into building a dormitory at Dudley Hall School in Norton, suggesting it would leave a lasting legacy.
“This would be a meaningful contribution that could bear his name or that of a loved one. There is a serious shortage of classrooms, and he could fund a new block for students. Imagine a ‘Wicknell Chivayo Block’ or dormitory,” Mliswa proposed.
He concluded by urging Chivayo to reach out to the school’s head, Mrs Tagwirei, at 0772 815 899, should he consider supporting the initiative.
