A 65-year-old suspected armed robber is under police guard at Parirenyatwa Hospital after being shot and arrested following a dramatic police pursuit that stretched from Harare to Marondera.
The suspect, identified as Kenny Magena, was reportedly involved in an armed robbery at a Harare residence on April 26, alongside accomplices named Collen Marion Banda, Kudakwashe Mawonya, Felix Tagonera, and Clemence Fadzai Manyika. The group allegedly planned and executed an ambush targeting Costas Andreas Klostris at his home.
According to official court submissions, Klostris returned home around 4:30 PM, where he was immediately confronted by the gang. Wearing balaclavas and armed with pistols, the robbers allegedly forced him out of his vehicle and demanded cash. In fear for his life, Klostris cooperated and pointed them to a basket inside his car containing money.
The assailants reportedly made off with US$13,500, leaving Klostris restrained before escaping the scene. After managing to untie himself, Klostris contacted the police, who quickly launched a pursuit of the suspects’ getaway vehicle.
Law enforcement officers chased the suspects toward Marondera, firing warning shots during the pursuit. The suspects eventually stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. In the ensuing confrontation, police opened fire, striking Magena in the lower left leg, which led to his capture.
Magena was taken into custody and transported to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable. A subsequent search of the suspects’ vehicle uncovered a black 9mm Retay MOD 92 blank pistol (serial number RIYREROYSO1-2407082), a bottle of pepper spray, a pair of gloves, two grinder discs, and cable ties. Authorities also recovered US$13,116 in cash from the group.
The suspects now face multiple charges related to the armed robbery and evasion of arrest
