A suspect was fatally shot on May 12, 2025, at the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal after allegedly trying to disarm a court orderly.
The Department of Justice reported that the situation escalated when the suspect attempted to seize the firearm. A second orderly responded immediately, discharging a weapon and fatally wounding the individual, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a formal investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice praised the swift and professional actions of the court personnel and confirmed that court proceedings resumed as scheduled.
In light of the event, authorities have announced the implementation of stricter security protocols aimed at safeguarding all individuals within court premises.
