HARARE — A Harare man has been sentenced to two years in prison and permanently banned from driving certain classes of vehicles after being convicted of reckless driving.

The Harare Magistrates Court found Ruzvidzo Freedom (32), of Hatcliffe, guilty after he was caught driving against oncoming traffic at the busy Second Street (Sam Nujoma) and Upper East Road intersection.

The court heard that Freedom, who was driving a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus, ignored traffic regulations by entering a one-way lane and obstructing other motorists during rush hour. Although no injuries or accidents occurred, the magistrate ruled that his actions had placed members of the public at serious risk.

As part of the sentence, Freedom’s driver’s licence was canceled, and he has been permanently disqualified from driving vehicles in classes 2, 4, and 5. These categories cover minibuses, trucks, and heavy vehicles.

Passing judgment, the court emphasised that reckless driving will not be tolerated on Zimbabwe’s roads. “Driving against traffic endangers lives and can cause deadly accidents. Offenders will face harsh penalties, including imprisonment and lifetime driving bans,” the magistrate said.

Authorities have urged motorists to prioritise safety and obey traffic laws, warning that reckless conduct will attract severe punishment. “Public safety comes first. Every reckless driver is a potential killer on our roads,” a court official said outside the courtroom.
