The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has announced a reduction in fares for its special Rail Leisure train service on the Harare–Mutare route, which coincides with the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo.

The new fare has been set at US$20 one way, down from the previously announced US$60. The service, launched under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development—Our Future”, is being run in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry (MoTHI) and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).

The train has the capacity to carry 243 passengers, with coaches currently being refurbished at the Bulawayo mechanical workshops. NRZ said the Harare–Mutare railway line has also been fully rehabilitated to ensure smooth travel while showcasing Zimbabwe’s scenic landscapes.

The inaugural luxury train ride will depart Harare on September 5 at 0700hrs, followed by trips on September 7 and 9. Return journeys from Mutare to Harare are scheduled for September 6 and 8 at the same time. In addition, NRZ has confirmed a special overnight return trip from Mutare to Harare on September 12, departing at 2000hrs. No trains will operate on September 10 and 11, which have been reserved for excursions within Mutare.

Officials said the service will provide passengers with a unique blend of luxury and convenience while creating opportunities for exhibitors, buyers, and media attending the expo. Onboard entertainment and refreshments will also be available throughout the journey.

The train will feature three main categories of coaches: dining coaches with fitted seats and tables, sleeper coaches equipped with beds for passengers who prefer to rest, and a dance coach designed for socialising, complete with a full bar, catering services, and WiFi. Clean restrooms have also been fitted for passenger comfort.

“We are thrilled by the great interest Zimbabweans have shown in our trains over the past few days,” NRZ said in a statement. “This undertaking is specifically tailored for the tourism expo, but we will explore further collaborations beyond the event.”

The initiative is expected to boost domestic tourism by giving both Zimbabweans and international visitors a chance to experience rail leisure travel while enjoying the country’s cultural and natural attractions.
