A 19-year-old man, Carrington Mutasa, has been convicted of bestiality by the Mutare Magistrates Court and sentenced to eight months in prison, with the sentence largely suspended on the condition that he completes 175 hours of community service.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), the offence took place on September 16, 2025, at around 5:30 pm in Piki Village under Chief Zimunya, Mutare.

The court heard that Mutasa entered the homestead of the complainant when no one was at home. He unlawfully went into the fowl run, grabbed a hen, and engaged in sexual activity with it.

After the incident, the complainant’s granddaughter saw Mutasa leaving the fowl run. She reported what she had witnessed to her grandmother, prompting the complainant to inspect the fowl run.

Upon inspection, the complainant discovered that one of her hens had sustained injuries, with a large hole on its cloaca area.

The complainant then informed neighbours about the incident, and with their assistance, Mutasa was apprehended. During the confrontation, Mutasa confessed to having had sexual intercourse with the hen.

The matter was reported to Zimunya Police Post, leading to Mutasa’s arrest and prosecution.

In delivering sentence, the court suspended the prison term on condition that Mutasa performs 175 hours of community service, warning that failure to complete the service would result in him serving the custodial sentence.
