A National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) goods train derailed in Makambe, Chikombedzi, following heavy rains that eroded the railway foundation. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, which occurred during recent adverse weather conditions.
The derailment disrupted operations as several wagons carrying coal and chrome were damaged. Initial reports indicate that the accident was primarily caused by a washaway, a situation where water erosion destabilizes the railway structure.
NRZ spokesperson Andrew Kunambura confirmed the details of the incident, explaining that a recovery team has already been dispatched to the site. “There are no injuries or fatalities, and the derailment was caused by a washaway that disrupted the railway formation,” Kunambura stated. He emphasized that the condition of the railway system was directly impacted by the flash floods resulting from the heavy rainfall.
The derailment has raised concerns about the safety and maintenance of railway infrastructure in the region, particularly during the rainy season when such incidents are more likely. Kunambura assured the public that the railway line is expected to reopen within 48 hours, contingent upon the successful recovery operations.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely as efforts continue to assess the damage and remove the derailed wagons from the tracks. The focus remains on restoring normal services while ensuring safety measures are observed.
Residents of Chikombedzi expressed relief at the absence of injuries, but they noted the importance of reinforcing railway infrastructure to prevent future incidents. Many in the area rely on the rail system for transporting goods, and any disruption can have significant impacts on local businesses.
As the recovery team works diligently at the site, NRZ officials have committed to evaluating the railway’s structural integrity to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The organization aims to improve its response to weather-related disruptions, ensuring safer transportation for all.
Community members and stakeholders will be looking for updates as work progresses, hoping for a swift return to regular train operations.
