HARARE — An outbreak of bed bugs has gripped parts of Mbare, sparking urgent intervention from the City of Harare (CoH). The insects, locally known as tsikidzi, have infested the densely populated Matererini and Matapi Flats, prompting health authorities to launch a fumigation blitz starting today, April 7.
According to City spokesperson Stanley Gama, pest control teams have already conducted preliminary assessments in the affected zones. “The City of Harare Pest Control Section has been on the ground to assess the situation and mobilize the necessary equipment and resources. Our teams will commence spraying on Monday morning,” Gama said in a press statement.
In addition to the fumigation, council officials are rolling out public awareness campaigns aimed at equipping residents with preventative knowledge. Gama emphasized that overcrowding remains a key accelerant in such outbreaks, urging locals to play an active role in managing the crisis.
Community involvement will be critical, with the city calling on volunteers to assist in achieving wider spray coverage. “Spraying alone won’t eliminate the problem,” Gama warned. “Bed bugs hide in hard-to-reach places such as cracks in furniture and walls. Regular cleaning is necessary to tackle areas where chemicals fall short.”
Authorities are urging residents in and around the Mbare Flats to remain cooperative and vigilant. The City Council maintains that both chemical treatment and consistent hygiene practices are vital in curbing the spread and reemergence of the infestation.
