A high school teacher in Bulawayo, Tyson Lunga, has been arrested and charged with aggravated indecent assault following allegations involving nine male students under his care.
Lunga, who was assigned to oversee students at the school’s hostel, is accused of committing the assaults on separate occasions. The incidents reportedly took place while he was responsible for the welfare of the learners residing in the hostel.
The matter came to light after officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Learner Welfare Department conducted interviews with boys at the school. The interviews were part of an internal investigation into student welfare.
Bulawayo Provincial Education Director, Bernard Mazambani, confirmed the allegations. “What we did was to task the learner welfare department psychologist, so they have their ways of getting information out,” Mazambani said. “They interviewed the kids, some of them were shy about it but the rest exposed what was happening in the school. The kids opened up on what was happening on the ground. So far the confirmed cases are nine.”
Authorities have not yet released the name of the school involved, and the investigation is ongoing. The Ministry has not issued an official statement on possible disciplinary or legal actions beyond the current arrest.
This case follows a similar incident reported at Masase High School in Mberengwa, where another teacher is alleged to have indecently assaulted male students. That teacher is still at large.
