A car drove into crowds of Liverpool football fans celebrating the club’s Premier League triumph on Monday, injuring several people. Police have arrested a 53-year-old local man in connection with the incident and say investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the collision.
The vehicle, described as a dark-colored people carrier, swerved through packed streets where tens of thousands had gathered for the team’s victory parade. Eyewitnesses described the moment as chaotic and violent, with fans being knocked over as the car pushed through. At least four people were seen carried away on stretchers by emergency crews.
“It was extremely fast,” said Harry Rashid, a fan who had travelled from Birmingham to witness the parade. He described hearing a series of disturbing “pops” as the car struck people. “It was horrible—you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people,” Rashid told reporters.
Merseyside Police urged the public to remain calm and confirmed the suspect is a white British male from the Liverpool area. Emergency services, including fire and ambulance crews, responded rapidly, with cordons established around the crash site. North West Ambulance Service said it was prioritizing urgent medical care for those injured.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “appalling” and thanked emergency workers for their swift response. The event adds to a long history of tragic moments in Liverpool’s football legacy, including the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and the Heysel Stadium tragedy in 1985.
