Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) turned out in large numbers at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to take part in a “VAT Victory March” headed toward the National Treasury.
The event marked their celebration of a recent court ruling that paused a proposed increase in value-added tax (VAT).
Led by EFF commander-in-chief Julius Malema, the demonstration followed a decision by the Western Cape High Court to suspend a 0.5% VAT hike.
The ruling came after a rare joint legal effort by the EFF and the Democratic Alliance (DA), who challenged the government’s planned tax adjustment in court.
