A 62-year-old man, Daniel Chauke, is facing serious charges, including three counts of murder and multiple counts of s@xual assault, in connection with a string of violent crimes committed in the Chipinge and Chimanimani areas.
In the first reported case, which occurred on October 21, 2023, it is alleged that Chauke approached a woman, Ruth Sithole, who was working in her field in Chikwanda Village, under Chief Mutema.
After she reportedly declined his request to help with farm labour, Chauke is said to have attacked her, dragging her some 40 metres, assaulting her, and ending her life by strangulation. Authorities say he also killed her dog, stole her lunchbox, and was later found in possession of a spoon belonging to the deceased.
In a second incident on April 24, 2024, Chauke is accused of confronting Honeni Manaka Masimandoyo in Derera Village, Chief Ngorima area, Chimanimani. After allegedly being rejected following an unwanted advance, Chauke reportedly dragged her into a nearby bush, where he assaulted her.
According to the police, he then mutilated her body and fled with her personal items. One of these items was later recovered in his possession.
The third case took place on May 26, 2024, near the Budzi River in Chipinge. The victim, Siliya Maponese, was reportedly on her way to Scort Village when she encountered Chauke. After again being rejected, he allegedly forced her into a secluded area, assaulted her, and ended her life.
Police say he left the scene with her cellphone, which was later recovered from him.
Chauke has been arrested and remains in custody. Police investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence in these disturbing cases.
