Two people died on Sunday night after their vehicle slammed into a tree during a high-speed chase with a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer. The deadly incident unfolded around 10:30 PM along Gweru-Bristol Road, involving a Toyota Aqua allegedly pursued by Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatal crash, adding that both criminal and internal disciplinary proceedings have been launched against the officer. “Investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the pursuit and whether standard protocols were followed,” Nyathi said in a statement.

While the names of the deceased are being withheld pending identification by next of kin, the crash has reignited public concern over the conduct of police during high-speed chases. Authorities have not yet disclosed what triggered the pursuit.

The case has prompted calls for tighter oversight and clearer operational guidelines for law enforcement, with critics pointing to the growing risk of avoidable fatalities during police pursuits on Zimbabwe’s roads.
