Three buses and a trailer belonging to Greyhound were destroyed in a fire at the company’s depot in Jet Park, Boksburg, on the East Rand, on Sunday.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and no injuries were reported. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are under way to determine what sparked the incident.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Eric Maloka said firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to contain the fire before it spread further.
“Two buses managed to escape the fire and were driven to a safer area,” Maloka said. “No injuries were reported during or after the operation and the cause of the fire is still unknown and remains the subject of investigation by our fire officials.”
Greyhound, one of South Africa’s well-known long-distance bus operators, has not yet issued a statement regarding the fire or the extent of the damage.
Fire officials have indicated that their investigation will focus on the source of the fire and whether safety protocols at the depot were followed. Further updates are expected once the probe is completed.
