Wicknell Chivayo has clarified that he did not make a record-breaking lobola payment of US$300,000 during a ceremony in Marondera on Saturday.

In an exclusive interview with H Metro, the Harare businessman explained that while he did spend a significant amount on the extravagant event, the actual lobola payment to his in-laws was far less than the circulating figure. Chivayo stated that reports suggesting he paid US$300,000 pertain to the total cost of the lavish ceremony rather than the sum given to his in-laws as lobola.

Chivayo was honoring the traditional lobola for his partner, Lucy Muteke. He revealed that the impression created was misleading, as his in-laws only required a payment of around US$20,000 for lobola.

He noted that lobola comprised just a fraction of the overall expenses, with most of the funds allocated to entertainment, which featured several bands, as well as significant expenditures on decor, drinks, and other event-related costs.
Chivayo commended his in-laws for their “humble and understanding” nature, which helped keep the traditional ceremony within the customary financial norms of such gatherings.

He mentioned sending a messenger with US$50,000 to cover the lobola requirements, and the messenger later confirmed that all demands had been met with that payment, leaving a substantial amount of change.
