The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship provides financial support to exceptional students from developing countries who demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship is available for those admitted to the Master of Science in Sustainability program at the United Nations University—Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).

Scholarship Benefits & Duration:

  • The program offers a monthly living allowance of 120,000 JPY (approximately) for up to 24 months.
  • Tuition fee waivers may be granted to recipients.
  • However, students must cover their own travel expenses, visa processing fees, and health/accident insurance costs.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the Master of Science in Sustainability program, applicants must meet the following requirements by the application deadline:

Academic & Language Requirements:

  • • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a sustainability-related field from a recognised university is required. Students expecting to graduate before September 2024 may also apply.
  • • A minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, which is equivalent to 70% on a 100% scale, is required.
  • Proof of English proficiency through one of the following scores:
    • TOEFL-PBT: 600
    • TOEFL-iBT: 100
    • IELTS Academic: 7.0

Scholarship-Specific Requirements:

  • Applicants must be citizens of developing countries who can prove financial need.
  • Those currently residing in Japan on a working visa are not eligible.
  • Individuals already enrolled in another postgraduate program (including those who have earned a master’s degree from a non-UNU-IAS institution) are ineligible.
  • Recipients of other scholarships cannot receive this award concurrently.

Application Process:

  • Applicants do not need to submit a separate scholarship application.
  • Eligible candidates are automatically considered for the JFUNU scholarship during the admission selection process.
  • The application must be submitted through the online admissions portal by 12 February 2025 (23:59 Japan Standard Time).
