Johane Masowe

Police in Zimbabwe are searching for two self-proclaimed prophets from the Johane Masowe Apostolic Faith Church who allegedly k!lled a man after he questioned their unusual religious practices.

The victim, 48-year-old Shepherd Mpofu, was brutally beaten with clay pots and stones after confronting the prophets about scattering ashes near residential homes in Kadoma’s Mupamombe Housing Scheme.

According to police reports, the suspects, Misheck Muperiwa (22) and Costain Tshuma (28), were conducting early-morning prayers at around 7 AM on January 31. As part of their ritual, they sprinkled charcoal and ashes in the area, claiming it was a sacred practice.

Mpofu, however, challenged them on their actions, which led to a violent response. The two men allegedly attacked him with clay pots before striking him repeatedly with stones as he lay defenceless.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the attack, stating, “They smashed him with mbiya (clay pots) and then continued to assault him with stones.”

Neighbours who witnessed the attack attempted to intervene, but the enraged prophets reportedly turned on them as well. By the time Mpofu was rescued, he had suffered severe injuries. He was rushed to Kadoma General Hospital, but his condition was critical, and he passed away a few days later.

The two suspects fled the scene and remain at large. Police have since launched a manhunt and are urging the public to come forward with any information on their whereabouts.

“This is a serious matter, and we need assistance from anyone who can help locate these individuals,” Inspector Kohwera appealed.

The incident has sparked concern within the apostolic faith community, where some religious leaders operate with little regulation or oversight.
