A 79-year-old British man, identified as Edgar Charles Frederick, lost his life in a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle from Kenyan President William Ruto’s motorcade.
The fatal accident occurred on Thursday along a major road in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. Authorities have since launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the driver of a support vehicle that was part of the president’s official convoy.
According to police spokesperson Michael Muchiri, Frederick had travelled to Kenya to visit his sister and nephew, who reside in the country. His family has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Friday.
The driver, who allegedly failed to stop after the accident, is set to face legal proceedings following the completion of the investigation.
A representative from the UK High Commission acknowledged awareness of the reports and confirmed efforts to gather more details on the incident.
Videos circulating on social media depict a man in blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt lying injured on the road near a busy shopping district. Additional images show the victim covered with a Maasai shuka, a traditional checked shawl.
Muchiri clarified that the vehicle involved was part of the regional administration’s fleet and was assisting the presidential security team.
On the same day, President Ruto was holding public engagements in the vicinity of the accident scene as part of his ongoing political outreach in Nairobi.
