A 39-year-old man from Madokero, Harare, suffered a staggering loss after a daring burglary resulted in the theft of US$280,000 in cash, police confirmed Friday. The incident occurred on May 30, 2025.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), an unidentified suspect unlawfully entered the man’s home and took a small bag containing the cash, which had been stashed inside a bedroom wardrobe. No arrests have been made.
The burglary has sparked debate online, with Zimbabweans reacting strongly to the idea of storing such a large sum in a private home. Social media users questioned why the money wasn’t secured in a bank.
Speculation is growing that the heist may have involved someone with inside knowledge. Meanwhile, ZRP says investigations are ongoing and has urged anyone with information to come forward.
