Kruger National Park

A devastating poisoning incident in the Mahlangeni Section of Kruger National Park has resulted in the deaths of 116 vultures after the birds fed on an elephant carcass deliberately laced with toxic substances by poachers.

The event, one of the most severe of its kind in the region, underscores the increasing use of agrochemicals as tools in illegal wildlife activities.

These substances are often used to target animals indirectly, creating a ripple effect on other vulnerable species like vultures.

In response, 84 vultures were successfully rescued. Of these, 39 were transferred to SANParks’ K9 Unit in Phalaborwa, while the remainder were taken to Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for further treatment and recovery.

Conservation authorities warn that vultures and lions are being deliberately targeted, particularly for use in the illegal traditional medicine (muthi) trade, a growing threat to South Africa’s wildlife biodiversity.
