The Mbire community has been left in shock and distress following the brutal rape of a 96-year-old grandmother, who remains hospitalized as she recovers from injuries sustained during the attack. The horrific incident has sparked outrage, with residents demanding swift justice.
The suspect, Tafadzwa Kazungaire (26) of Charuma Village, appeared before the Guruve Magistrates’ Court on Friday, March 14. He was remanded in custody as legal proceedings continue. According to the prosecution, the crime occurred on the night of March 13, when Kazungaire allegedly arrived at the victim’s homestead around midnight and knocked on her door.
Unaware of the danger, the elderly woman asked who was at the door. The suspect reportedly claimed to be her nephew visiting from Harare. Trusting his words, she partially opened the door, only for Kazungaire to force his way inside. He then allegedly overpowered the defenseless woman and raped her before fleeing into the night.
The victim’s cries for help alerted nearby villagers, who quickly mobilized to track down the suspect. Following footprints in the sand, they arrived at Kazungaire’s home, where they reportedly discovered blood-stained undergarments and other incriminating evidence. An enraged mob performed a citizen’s arrest before handing him over to the police.
As investigations continue, the elderly woman remains under medical care. The shocking crime has left the community reeling, with local leaders and residents calling for tougher measures to protect vulnerable citizens. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
