The Zimbabwean government, through the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), has introduced breathalysers for police use at roadblocks to curb road accidents, especially during the festive season. This initiative aims to target motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, enhancing road safety. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona confirmed the acquisition of additional breathalysers to equip more police officers.
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe emphasized the importance of police visibility and collaboration with other stakeholders to enforce road rules. The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has also contributed resources for the purchase of breathalyser machines
This move is part of a broader effort to reduce road traffic accidents by addressing risky behaviors such as speeding, overloading, and driving under the influence
