Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party appears to be grappling with growing internal discord, but party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has dismissed concerns over factional infighting.

Reports suggest the party is divided into two camps: one faction is said to advocate postponing the 2028 elections to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030, while another faction, reportedly aligned with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, insists on upholding the constitutional two-term presidential limit.

Neither Mnangagwa nor Chiwenga has publicly acknowledged these alleged divisions.

During a press briefing at the ZANU-PF headquarters, Mutsvangwa denied knowledge of the reported tensions, stating, “That question is unfamiliar to me. I prefer to focus on issues with tangible outcomes.”

Signs of division have been evident at recent public events. At a gathering at Heroes Acre, some attendees chanted slogans supporting either Mnangagwa or Chiwenga, highlighting internal disagreements.

Meanwhile, a group of war veterans led by Blessed Geza has demanded Mnangagwa’s resignation, accusing his government of corruption.

Despite speculation about an extended tenure, Mnangagwa has repeatedly affirmed that his current term, set to end in 2028, will be his last, adhering to constitutional limits.

However, some ZANU-PF members appear to be pushing for him to stay beyond his term.

Mutsvangwa, without naming anyone specifically, hinted that Geza might be acting under the influence of individuals with ulterior motives seeking to destabilise the party.

“I am deeply troubled by how he is being manipulated by people pursuing their own agenda,” Mutsvangwa said. “Comrade Geza, I don’t know what other concerns you might have, but as war veterans, we should remain steadfast. I hope he stops following misguided individuals who are leading him astray.”

These recent developments evoke memories of earlier power struggles within ZANU-PF, particularly the events leading to the removal of Robert Mugabe as the party’s leader, ultimately paving the way for Mnangagwa’s rise to power.
