President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his commitment to adhering to Zimbabwe’s Constitution, assuring citizens that he has no intention of extending his tenure beyond the legal term limits.

During a discussion with media editors at State House in Harare on Monday, Mnangagwa dismissed speculation about seeking to prolong his presidency.

“I will operate within the boundaries set by the Constitution,” he stated, emphasising his administration’s adherence to the democratic principles outlined in the nation’s supreme law.

His remarks come amid ongoing political discourse regarding succession within the ruling ZANU-PF party. With his current term set to end in 2028, some analysts have speculated about potential amendments that could extend his rule.

However, his latest assurances suggest that he intends to step down as required by law.

Since assuming office in 2017 following Robert Mugabe’s resignation, Mnangagwa has portrayed himself as a reformist leader while facing scrutiny over governance, economic challenges, and human rights concerns.

His stance on respecting constitutional term limits aligns with broader calls for political stability and adherence to democratic norms in Zimbabwe.

The engagement with media professionals was part of a broader effort to foster dialogue between the government and the press.

Discussions also covered issues such as national development, economic policies, and the role of journalism in shaping public discourse.
