Nomcebo Zuma, the 21-year-old daughter of South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma, has married King Mswati III of Eswatini. The wedding, which took place at the Ludzidzini Royal Palace, marks Nomcebo as the 16th wife of the 56-year-old monarch.
The engagement was made official during the traditional reed dance ceremony, an eight-day event that serves as a rite of passage for young women in Eswatini. Nomcebo was presented as the “liphovela,” or royal fiancée, at the conclusion of the ceremony.
King Mswati III, known for his polygamous lifestyle, currently has 11 wives and has been married 15 times. Despite the significant age difference and the king’s controversial reputation, a spokesman for the Eswatini monarchy emphasized that the marriage is based on love.
