The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has clarified that it was not involved in the train collision that occurred in Gwanda on 18 April 2025. In a statement issued Friday, NRZ stated that the railway line where the accident took place is privately controlled and not part of its operations.

NRZ emphasized that both trains were privately operated and, as such, it cannot comment on behalf of the companies involved. “We have been inundated with inquiries… NRZ does not operate on that line,” the organization noted, while extending well wishes to the injured.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which happened around 6:15 AM at the 132-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge railway line. A goods train and a passenger train collided head-on, resulting in injuries.

According to police, 13 people sustained injuries in the crash. The passenger train was carrying 47 passengers and 31 staff members at the time of the collision. Investigations are ongoing.
