SHAMVA, MASHONALAND CENTRAL – The National Council of Chiefs is facing growing pressure to take action against Chief Nyamaropa after a shocking video surfaced showing him verbally abusing a woman during a village court session.

The chief, whose real name is Munyaradzi Tiringe, was caught on camera berating the woman, calling her “stupid” and stating, “there’s nothing amazing about you,” in an unprovoked tirade that left her visibly shaken. Her only apparent offense? Wearing sunglasses in his court.

In the video, Nyamaropa, ruling over Shamva in Mashonaland Central, is heard ordering the woman to remove her sunglasses, shouting in Shona: “Bvisa magirazi ayo. Bvisa mazigirazi. Schupeti. Unotonga kumba kwamai vako kwete munyika mangu wazvinzwa? Uri kuda kuona kuti panapa wakanyanya?”

Human Rights Activist Demands Accountability
The footage, uploaded to YouTube on November 24, has sparked outrage on social media and caught the attention of human rights activist Pritchard Tafadzwa Paradzayi. In a strongly worded petition to the National Council of Chiefs, Paradzayi called for an investigation into Nyamaropa’s conduct, labeling it an affront to the dignity and rights of women.

Paradzayi, represented by lawyer Obey Shava, also copied his letter to Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, who oversees traditional leaders.

“It gives an impression that the rights of women are not respected in traditional courts and can be violated with impunity,” Paradzayi wrote in the letter, dated November 29.

The activist argued that Chief Nyamaropa’s behavior reflects a “contemptuous and degrading attitude” towards women and tarnishes the reputation of traditional leaders. He highlighted how the incident undermines the standards of judicial conduct expected of chiefs, eroding public trust in their authority.

Constitutional Violations Alleged
Paradzayi’s letter also outlined legal concerns, stating that Nyamaropa’s actions violate Section 51 of Zimbabwe’s Constitution, which guarantees dignity, and Section 69, which ensures the right to a fair hearing.

“Chief Nyamaropa’s conduct impairs his subjects’ dignity and fails to meet the basic standards required of traditional leaders. His actions are indefensible from the perspective of any reasonable, fair-minded, and informed individual,” Paradzayi stated.

Public Outcry
The video has reignited discussions about the treatment of women in traditional courts, with critics arguing that such unchecked behavior perpetuates gender discrimination.

A resident from Shamva, speaking anonymously, said: “This is not the first time Chief Nyamaropa has shown arrogance. But this time, his conduct has been exposed to the world. It’s humiliating for us as a community.”

The National Council of Chiefs has yet to issue a response, but the pressure is mounting for the body to act decisively.
