POTRAZ Takes a Stand Against Cyberbullying, Calls for Collective Action
Harare, Zimbabwe – February 3, 2025
The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has issued a strong public notice condemning cyberbullying, urging citizens to take responsibility for fostering a safer digital environment. In the notice titled “Protecting Our Digital Community: Combating Cyberbullying Together,” POTRAZ expresses deep concern over the rising cases of online harassment and highlights the severe emotional and psychological consequences victims often face.
Cyberbullying, described as the act of sending or posting harmful, intimidating, or humiliating messages online, has become a growing issue in Zimbabwe’s digital space. POTRAZ warns that such behavior can cause significant distress to victims and, in extreme cases, lead to self-harm or even suicide. Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, the regulatory authority reminds the public that cyberbullying is a violation of personal privacy and a criminal offense under Section 164B of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) [Chapter 9:23]. Those found guilty of cyberbullying could face a fine of up to Level 10, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both.
In its effort to curb this growing problem, POTRAZ is calling on all Zimbabweans to embrace a culture of kindness, empathy, and mutual respect in their online engagements. The notice strongly urges individuals engaging in cyberbullying to stop immediately and reflect on the potential harm their actions may be causing. It emphasizes that words and actions in digital spaces have a lasting impact and that it is never too late to choose kindness over hostility.
The regulatory authority is also encouraging victims and witnesses of cyberbullying to report incidents promptly. It stresses that timely reporting is crucial in holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring justice for victims. POTRAZ has provided multiple avenues for reporting, including a dedicated phone line at (0242) 333032 and an email address at the.regulator@potraz.zw. Additionally, victims are advised to visit their nearest police station to report cases, as law enforcement authorities are equipped to investigate and address such issues effectively.
Beyond reporting incidents, POTRAZ is urging the public to show support for victims of cyberbullying. A simple act of kindness, listening to their concerns, or reminding them that they are not alone can go a long way in alleviating their distress. The notice underscores the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive digital culture where individuals feel safe, valued, and protected.
