Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has received an electric van donated by the Electric Vehicle Centre Africa, which operates the Build Your Dream (BYD) vehicle company. The donation was made to Precabe Farm and handed over to the President at State House this evening.
The van can travel up to 300 kilometers on a full charge, costing just US$5 in electricity. It doesn’t require traditional engine servicing, using two batteries and a few electrical connections instead.
While electric vehicles are available in Zimbabwe, their high cost and classification as luxury vehicles make them hard to afford.
They also face a carbon tax despite producing no emissions. The President said these issues will be addressed, stressing the need to promote ease of doing business in Zimbabwe.
