US President Trump said Saturday that the conflict between Israel and Iran should come to an end. In a social media post, Trump stated he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation and that Putin “feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end.”
The call came as Israeli strikes continued on Saturday, aiming to destroy Iran’s missile launchers and air-defense sites. Israel also struck targets in Tehran following a night of attacks that killed several people in the Tel Aviv area.
The Israeli military said 70 warplanes attacked more than 40 targets in Tehran overnight. The attacks came little more than a day after Israel suddenly launched airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Effie Defrin, a spokesperson for Israel’s military, described the attack as “the deepest distance that we have operated so far in Iran.” He said Israeli planes were able to create “aerial freedom of action in western Iran up until Tehran.”
Nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, set for Sunday in Oman, were canceled, according to Oman, the host country. Iran is not closing the door to resuming the talks if the Israeli attacks come to an end, a person briefed on a call between Iranian and European officials said.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, “Tehran will burn” if Iran continues to launch attacks against Israel. Israel’s military reported that most of the surface-to-surface missiles Iran fired on Friday night were intercepted, and a U.S. official confirmed the USA assisted in defending against Iran’s attack.
The situation remained tense on Saturday as the conflict unfolded and world leaders called for an end to the violence. Trump insisted peace should be restored and Iran should halt its attacks against Israel.
