Trump acknowledged Brown’s decades of service in a social media post, stating, “I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for his over 40 years of service to our country.”

This restructuring also includes the replacement of five other senior military officers, in addition to Brown.

A Leadership Shake-Up

General Brown was the second black officer to hold the position of chairman, an advisory role for both the president and the Secretary of Defence on national security matters. His dismissal comes after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously criticised Brown’s emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the military. Hegseth had suggested that such policies were misaligned with the military’s core mission.

Later on Friday, Hegseth announced additional high-profile removals, including Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations, and General Jim Slife, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Franchetti had made history as the first woman to lead the U.S. Navy.

All three officers removed on Friday had been appointed by former President Joe Biden. In a statement, Hegseth justified the changes, saying, “Under President Trump, we are putting in place new leadership that will focus our military on its core mission of deterring, fighting, and winning wars.”

New Appointments and Policy Direction

Trump has nominated Air Force Lieutenant General Dan Caine to replace Brown. Caine, a seasoned F-16 pilot and former CIA associate director for military affairs, was praised by Trump during a past speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where the president recalled first meeting him in Iraq.

The removals come amid broader policy shifts. The Pentagon also announced upcoming budget cuts, including the dismissal of 5,400 probationary employees next week.

Meanwhile, a federal court in Maryland has issued a temporary block on Trump’s efforts to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, with District Judge Adam Abelson citing potential constitutional violations concerning free speech.

The Broader Context

Rumours of Brown’s removal had been circulating for weeks, with speculation growing as he visited troops at the southern U.S. border just hours before Trump’s announcement. Brown had previously made headlines in 2020 when he addressed racial issues following the death of George Floyd, sharing his personal experiences as one of the few Black officers in his unit.

In 2022, Brown co-signed a memo establishing diversity initiatives within the Air Force, aiming to increase minority officer recruitment. These initiatives, however, faced criticism from conservatives who argued they were politically motivated.

Trump’s administration has taken a strong stance against diversity-focused policies in the military. One of his earliest decisions after returning to office was to dismiss the first female commandant of the Coast Guard, citing a perceived overemphasis on diversity efforts.

Before assuming his role, Hegseth had publicly advocated for changes to military leadership, stating in a podcast that removing the chairman of the Joint Chiefs should be a top priority.

As Trump’s administration continues reshaping the Pentagon, these changes signal a decisive shift in military policy with a renewed focus on combat readiness and traditional defence priorities.
