Authorities are searching for two University of Johannesburg (UJ) students from the Soweto campus who remain on the run following the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Simphiwe “Cebo” Biyela, a Grade 10 learner at Musi High School in Pimville, Soweto.
The incident, which occurred on May 6, has sparked widespread anger in the community, leading to ongoing protests outside the UJ Soweto campus since May 7.
According to reports, the altercation began when six allegedly intoxicated UJ students boarded a school bus uninvited, harassed pupils, and took personal belongings, including a beanie. A confrontation ensued, during which Biyela was stabbed. Some accounts claim he was also assaulted with a baseball bat and had his throat slit.
Two suspects, aged 19 and 24, have been arrested and are currently in police custody. The remaining two suspects have yet to be located.
UJ issued a statement condemning the violence and clarified that the incident took place at an off-campus, privately-owned residence in Power Park. The university extended condolences to the Biyela family and pledged disciplinary action where necessary.
Community leaders and relatives of the victim are calling for swift justice, with demonstrations focusing on the university’s handling of the case and the funeral preparations.
Police investigations are ongoing as efforts to track down the remaining suspects continue.
