The United States has reportedly enforced a new policy prohibiting its government personnel in China and Hong Kong from engaging in romantic relationships with Chinese citizens. According to the Associated Press (AP), the restriction applies to embassy staff, consulate workers, and contractors with security clearance.

Sources indicate that the policy was implemented in January under former US Ambassador Nicholas Burns before his departure from China. The move expands previous restrictions, which last year limited relationships between US personnel and Chinese guards or support staff. The broader ban was introduced just days before the transition of the US presidency.

The policy affects the US embassy in Beijing and consulates in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenyang. Although not publicly announced, the directive was reportedly communicated internally to all affected personnel in early 2025.

Officials with existing relationships involving Chinese citizens may request exemptions. However, if an exemption is denied, they must either end their relationship or resign from their position. Any violation of the policy results in immediate removal from China.

When approached for comment, the US State Department declined to discuss the matter, stating that it does not comment on internal policies.
