Video: Traffic Gridlock as EMPD Officers Protest Over Pay and Working Conditions

A protest by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers has thrown major highways into chaos, with striking officers disrupting traffic on key routes such as the R21, R24, N3, N12, and N17.

The officers, demanding better wages, the restoration of overtime pay, and improved working conditions, have taken to the streets in what authorities have deemed an illegal strike.

City officials in Ekurhuleni have strongly criticised the protest, labelling it unlawful and urging officers to return to work.

However, the strike has already caused significant frustration among commuters, as road closures and blockages bring traffic to a standstill.

According to protesting officers, their overtime pay was drastically reduced from 60 hours to just 16 per month, severely affecting their income.

They are also pushing for equal pay and working conditions comparable to those of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD). Other complaints include concerns over unfair promotions and a lack of proper resources for high-risk operations.

Negotiations between EMPD representatives and city officials are ongoing in an effort to resolve the dispute.

Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to avoid the affected roads and remain cautious amid the ongoing disruptions.
