The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the state media outlet, has reversed its ban on popular Zimdancehall artist Winky D.

Winky D had been excluded from state airwaves for over a year following the release of his album “Eureka Eureka,” which contains sharp social commentary that displeased the ruling elite.

According to insiders, the reversal is linked to changes in ZBC’s leadership, particularly under the direction of the newly appointed acting Chief Executive Officer, Charles Munganasa. This move is seen as part of a new strategy by the corporation’s new board.

However, not all of Winky D’s music from “Eureka Eureka” is being welcomed back. Songs like “Ibotso” and “Dzimba dzemabwe” remain banned.

“There is a new board implementing a new strategy. While we won’t play all of his songs, allowing some back on the air is a decision by the new board. The previous board was more rigid and took things personally,” an inside source revealed.

Winky D’s latest extended play (EP), “Love Quartet,” is now enjoying considerable airplay on local radio stations.

Reflecting on the impact of the ban during his New Year’s Eve concert, Winky D said, “From 2004 up until 2024, 2023 was the most difficult year for me musically. I couldn’t get an interview on the radio for the show. I only had the internet and dreams, and then you (fans).”
