The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) emerged as a dominant force at the 9th edition of the Road Safety Journalistic Awards, clinching five accolades for its outstanding contributions to road safety awareness. The national broadcaster’s commitment to responsible journalism and public education was celebrated in a night of recognition and achievement.
Leading the honors, ZBC’s Peter Chivhima was crowned Best Electronic Media Reporter of the Year, while his colleague John Nhandara secured the first runner-up spot in the same category. Chivhima dedicated the award to his entire newsroom team, emphasizing the collective effort behind impactful storytelling. “News gathering is a team effort, and we remain committed to promoting road safety awareness,” he stated.
Further cementing its influence in the sector, ZBC was named First Runner-Up for Best Media House of the Year in the Broadcast category. In addition, ZBC Montrose Studios received the prestigious Chairman’s Honorary Award, a testament to its unwavering dedication to road safety reporting.
Stakeholders lauded the media’s role in fostering safer roads, with Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe Board Chairperson Bishop Kura Sibanda emphasizing the importance of continued awareness efforts. “The media plays a critical role in shaping public attitudes toward road safety, and we encourage them to keep highlighting solutions to road challenges,” he remarked.
With Zimbabwe ramping up efforts to curb road accidents, the awards underscore the pivotal role journalists play in driving behavioral change. Ministry of Transport Chief Director Engineer David Jana urged media professionals to uphold ethical standards in their reporting, reinforcing the call for a more informed and safety-conscious society.
