Zemura Backs Warriors to Bounce Back in World Cup Qualifiers

Despite Zimbabwe currently sitting at the bottom of their 2026 World Cup qualification group, versatile player Jordan Zemura remains optimistic that all is not lost.

With just two points from four matches, the Warriors trail group leaders Rwanda by five points. However, they have an opportunity to turn their fortunes around in the next few days.

Tomorrow, they face Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban before traveling to take on Nigeria, who sit just a point above them, next Tuesday.

Benin currently share the top spot in the group with Rwanda, though they have an inferior goal difference.

Warriors coach Michael Nees has already called on his squad to be fully prepared for the crucial clash against Benin.

Zemura, meanwhile, believes Zimbabwe can still push for a World Cup berth if they deliver strong performances and secure positive results in their remaining matches.

That journey, he insists, must start with a victory in Durban.

“We’re obviously not in the best position in these qualifiers,” Zemura admitted. “The first four games didn’t go as planned, and we didn’t perform to our potential. But we still have six matches ahead and 18 points to play for.

That gives us a fair chance, especially considering how tight the group is.”

He added, “Only five points separate us from the top, and with the number of games left, there is still a lot to fight for. We need to give everything our energy, focus, and attention to detail. Every little aspect matters now.”

The Udinese star acknowledged that Benin will be a tough opponent, given their strong squad and current standing in the group.

“If you look at their team, you will understand why they are doing well. They have players in top leagues, including the Bundesliga, which is one of the best in the world,” he said.

“You have to respect a team like that. They are leading the group, while we are at the bottom, and that speaks volumes about their quality. I personally have not played against them, and I believe most of my teammates have not either.

But we have an idea of their playing style, and we need to stay compact and execute our game plan.

“The key now is to get that first win. We have not won in four games, so we need that spark to turn things around. Ultimately, our goal is to fight, push forward, and see where that takes us.”

Zemura also expressed his excitement over the return of former captain Knowledge Musona, who recently reversed his international retirement after being persuaded by Nees.

“Knowledge is a special player and a crucial piece of this team. Everyone is happy to have him back,” Zemura said. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable as we push for World Cup qualification.”
