Budapest, Hungary – The Zimbabwe chess team has achieved a remarkable feat by finishing second in Africa at the 45th Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest. This impressive performance saw Zimbabwe surpass South Africa, who secured the third position.
In the African rankings, Zimbabwe emerged second out of 50 participating countries, a significant improvement from their fourth-place finish in 2022. This achievement underscores the team’s dedication and strategic prowess on the international stage.
Zimbabwe’s stellar performance also earned them the honor of being one of the four African teams to qualify for the individual World Chess Cup tournament. Alongside Egypt, South Africa, and Algeria, Zimbabwe will have the opportunity to send a representative to compete at this prestigious event.
On the global scale, Zimbabwe finished 56th out of 196 countries in the open section chess category. This notable ranking highlights the team’s competitive edge and growing prominence in the chess world.
