In response to the the social outburst on the new currency introduced by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabawe, the president of the people for the people says that the country is in need of political change rather than currency change. Speaking on his twitter “now X” account Adv N. Chamisa says “Instead of introducing a structured currency, we need a conversation that produces a Citizens-backed structured political change and new government.”
The new currency ZiG short for Zimbabawe Gold caused a social stir in most parts of Zimbabwe leading to the refusal of the old 100bond notes from small scale retailers who are afraid of running a loss in their business. One local tuckshop owner from Chitungwiza’s Unit H says ” Zvitori nani kuti effoet yavari kuisa pakutipa mari nyowani dai vagadzirisa ma road kana kupa vanotambura kwete kutipa confusion”.
It turns out that in everything that the government tries to do, it turns to politics supporting Adv Chamisa’s claim to a political change.
“A bond note by another name will not fix our challenges. A currency is a bundle of confidence. And confidence is a product of good politics and good leadership. Currency change has failed before. And it surely will fail again. All this, because of broken politics, disputed elections and contested national processes. In recent years, all these currencies failed because of bad politics: ZW$, USD, Bond note, RTGS, ZWL$, Gold coins, ZiG. It is given that the new currency will fail again because of BAD POLITICS.” Says Adv Chamisa.
Is this what Zimbabawe needs now, a new currency or political change?
